Is Jussie Smollett a drug user in need of help? According to a new report, Smollett told the Chicago Police when he was arrested that he had an untreated drug problem. Abel and Ola Osundairo, the two Nigerian brothers who were initial suspects in the case then after being detained told investigators a different story from Jussie were reportedly hired to stage an attack in order for Smollett to earn more money on the Fox series Empire. A report by TMZ states that Smollett made statements about his drug use to authorities.

Risa Lanier from Chicago’s Cook County State Attorney’s Office explained to the public that Smollett had known Abel since 2017 and purchased Molly, or Ecstasy from him in addition to working with him on Empire. Lanier stated the following during a press conference.

“Defendant Smollett requested Abel to provide him with “Molly” which is street name for that narcotic Ecstasy.”

As more of the state’s case is presented, the public is left bewildered at the alleged actions. According to authorities, Jussie Smollett paid brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo in a backdated personal check. They also say that he gave the men $100 to purchase the items used in the attack.

Jussie has continued to say that he is innocent of the allegations and his attorneys put out a statement that they will defend their client aggressively.

Will Jussie Smollett use a drug habit as part of a defense strategy? Will his attorneys say it is a mitigating factor that must be considered should this case go to trial?

The nation has been in an uproar since Smollett first reported being the victim of a hate crime that allegedly targeted both his race and sexual orientation. He claimed that two white men attacked him, hurled racial and homophobic slurs at him, doused him with bleach then put a noose around his neck.
