Woolworths mini trolley sends young boy to hospital

A Victorian mum has urged other parents to return a popular toy to Woolworths after her son was injured while using it.

She wants the supermarket giant to recall the Mini Supermarket Trolley product popular with kids after her son’s leg was stabbed by part of the product.

The woman says her seven-year-old son spent two days in hospital after it fell apart while he was pushing it and part of the trolley pierced his skin near his genitals.

“He had a hole in his skin inches away from his manly area, if it had pierced that area he would of most likely bled out,” his mother told NCA Newswire.

“We were inches away from losing him, they had to cut him to make more room for it to come out.”

Woolworths is investigating the incident, a spokesperson told NCA Newswire.

“We can understand how this is concerning for the little boy‘s mother,” the spokesperson said.

“We have spoken to the customer and apologised for what occurred.

“As a result we have asked the customer to return the trolley to her local store and we will be able to complete an internal investigation into the product.”

The incident was traumatic for the pair, the mother said.

“We couldn’t move him to the car so we rang an ambulance and not even they could get it out they took him to hospital and a couple hours later it was out,” she said.

“He was humiliated.”

The mother shared her story in a post on Facebook, warning that their family had been “inches away from losing him”.

“We are very lucky as it was very close to being fatal,” she said on Facebook.

She says the rounded hook that holds parts of the trolley together caused the injury.

“There is nothing holding them together they are super dangerous,” she said.

“Children can take them apart as they please.”

The trolley has been stocked by Woolworths for more than two years, and NCA Newswire understands the supermarket has not been made aware of any similar complaints.
